2 Great Shows, 1 Great Theater

There are two amazing plays showing at Drury Lane Theater right now.  Whether you are looking for a night out with the girls or your Hubby or maybe you are trying to find something special to do with your kiddos to celebrate spring/summer…  either way Drury Lane has got you covered.

Playing now through June 17th, Hairspray is one of the most entertaining musicals I have ever seen. It is so high-energy and vibrant- literally vibrant- with the most colorful and fun costumes!  The singing is contagious and the characters are super funny.

Set in 1960’s Baltimore, HAIRSPRAY is the exuberant story of big-hearted, pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad, who does whatever it takes to fulfill her lifelong dream of appearing on the popular Corny Collins Show. Can this plus-size trendsetter vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of handsome Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her fabulous ‘do?  This feel-good musical is a glorious celebration of following dreams and standing up for what’s right.

The performance schedule is as follows:  Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. ($35), Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. ($35) and 8 p.m. ($40), Fridays at 8:30 p.m. ($45), Saturdays at 5 p.m. ($45) and 8:30 p.m. ($46) and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. ($45) and 6 p.m. ($40).  Lunch and dinner theater packages range from $49.75 to $68 depending on the day of the week.  Group rates for Student tickets start as low as $20 and Senior Citizen tickets start as low as $30 for matinees and $44.75 for a matinee luncheon package.

And if you are looking more for something to do with your kiddos, I can’t recommend Drury Lane’s production of THE WIZARD OF OZ enough.  I took both my boys- ages 3 and 6- and all three of has thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  They were very creative with the props and costumes.  We especially loved the way they did the field of poppies and the melting of the witch at the end.  Our favorite character was by far the Cowardly Lion who was as close as you can get to the nostalgic version I had in my head from the original movie.  He was fantastic!!  The boys were laughing out loud and singing along!  For that hour, we really as if we too had been whisked away to Oz and were journeying on that yellow brick road with Dorothy and the gang. They even had a real dog play Toto which was a surprising treat.

And just as they did for their performance of A Christmas Carol, after the show all the performers sat on stage and took questions from all the kids in the audience.  I love this!  What a cool opportunity to spark their curiosity and maybe even a love of the performing arts!  Who knows, maybe it will be one of my sons up there someday and they’ll tribute their love of theater to those days their Mama took them to see plays when they were younger.  A mama can dream, right?!

A breakfast buffet with THE WIZARD OF OZ cast is offered April 28, May 12, May 19, May 26, and June 16 at 11:30 a.m. with the performance at 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. The breakfast buffet package price for adults is $25.00 and $22.00 for children 12 and under. Drury Lane Theatre’s family-friendly menu includes Scrambled Eggs, Tater Tots, Pancakes, Fresh Fruit, Mini Bagels, and Oatmeal.

Regular performances are at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday starting on April 25 (excludes May 2, May 5, June 6, June 7, June 13, June 14). There will be two performances at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on April 28, May 12, May 19, May 26, and June 16. Performance only tickets are available for $12 and a group rate of $10 per person is available for parties of 20 or more.
