**GIVEAWAY ALERT**
My boys and I had the pleasure of seeing Pinocchio at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater today. And plainly put… It was just fabulous!!
I always have a little anxiety about taking the boys downtown. I love to do it and try to go down as much as I can. But I do get worried sometimes about the specifics: the traffic, the directions, the driving, etc… Today’s trip was easy peasy. The show started at 11 so we left around 930. The traffic was almost none, we parked right in the Navy Pier parking garage, went in door#5, and took the elevator right to the entrance to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. We were sitting in our seats by 10:40 even with a pre-show trip to the bathroom.
The theater itself is so, so cool. It is three levels and in a U-shape around the stage, just like a true Shakespearean
theater should be. The actual set it simple but intriguing. They do have lots of things on wheels that come in and out throughout the show to create different scenes. The coolest part of the set for me ( and the boys) was the way they did the scene with the whale. Very creative and yet you totally knew they were in the belly of a whale.
What really made this show so great was the mix of puppets and people. They start the show with puppets and incorporate them throughout the show, using them to tell part of the story and keep the audience totally engaged. They told the story flawlessly, keeping my 3 and 5year old captivated the entire time. The music is great, the costumes are great (especially the fox and the cat who con Pinocchio out of his money) and Pinocchio’s nose ACTUALLY grows. I don’t even pretend to know how they do it, but I do know that my boys talked about it for hours afterwards. Their favorite part actually was when Geppetto and Pinocchio are in the whale. I think mine was the scene with the fox and the cat. But the whole show is amazing! I am definitely gonna try to go again before the show ends August 28th.
This is a great show for kids all ages. My 3yr old did great and understood most of what was happening with just an occasional explanation from me. My 5yr old knew exactly what was happening and sat on the edge of his seat with bright eyes for the entire 70minutes (no intermission). I really recommend this show to all of you. It is really, really great and something out of the ordinary. A truly memorable experience for your whole family!!
