More Music Together

When my son was about 3 months old we started going to a weekly Music Together class at Sherwood Conservatory of Music. In each class, we sing, dance, “play” instruments and learn various rhythm patterns. When we first started, I would place the baby on a blanket on the floor and sing and dance to him as he grinned and giggled at my (lack of) musicality!
As he’s gotten older he has graduated from the blanket to my lap. A couple of months ago he started clapping on his
own. A few weeks ago instead of waiting for an instrument to be handed to him, he crawled to the middle of the room to get it himself. Last week he “sang” along.
Everyday I watch my child change and grow, but there’s something about watching his progress in music class that makes me really aware of how he’s developing. I can think back to that first class when he couldn’t even roll over on his own and I am amazed that he crawled to his teacher this week to get a “rhythm secret.”
As a theatre person I have always been a firm believer in the power and importance of the arts. I know what the arts have done for me and my life and I am thrilled to watch them touch my son.
Will he always love music (or should I say music that doesn’t make me cringe?!?)? I don’t know. But I do know that he is already learning skills that he will always use and need. Taking this class encourages his creativity and self-expression, his fine motor skills are growing and his problem solving skills are being developed.
And if all of that isn’t reason enough to take this class, every week we have a blast singing, dancing and clapping together. (He is a MASTER clapper these days!)
When I originally signed us up for Music Together in September I was mainly doing it for me. I had a new baby and was desperate to get out of the house.
But it quickly became something I was doing for both of us. Some of my favorite memories come from those classes. Some of my son’s developmental changes have happened in those classes. And some of our best snuggles (each class ends with a lullaby) have happened in the Music Together classroom.
So I say, YEA! for Music Together! And YEA! for the arts!
Does your kid enjoy the arts? I’d love to know what other parents are doing with their babies too.
side note:We have posted MANY times around here about the merits of Music Together. I love hearing it from another mama’s perspective too! Thanks so much “Lucy!”
