Money-Saving Myth Busting

We are grateful again to Clair from MummyDeals.org for today’s guest post:
As I started to write this article I can hear the song in my head: “doo doo doo do another one bites the dust!” That’s because today we’re talking Myth Busting. Here are some common myths/questions that people ask me about couponing and getting great deals:
You Go to 5 Grocery Stores a Week
This is my favorite myth that I like to ask during my money saving seminars: “Do you think I go to 5 grocery stores a week?” Inevitably half of the room raises their hands. Then I say, “With a 2 year old in tow how many of you think I go to 5 grocery stores per week?” The hands go down. The thing is I’m a cherry picker who shops the sales, not the stores.
My mother in law goes to around 3 stores per week as she picks what’s on sale from each one. She doesn’t have children at home and only goes if she’s passing by but I’m still not convinced it’s worth it. If you’re like me and have to take a child in tow, it’s definitely not. Plus, again if you’re like me it’s not the kind of thing you enjoy. “Honey it’s Friday night and we have a babysitter. Do you want to go grocery shopping?!” is not the kind of thing you’re going to hear around my house!
Make it easy on yourself. Pick the store with the best deals that week and buy everything you need there. For me that changes week to week on where I go but I never run across town to save 20 cents/pound on something. Unless you’re buying 100 pounds of said product that is not worth the time or effort.
The key thing with grocery shopping is billing yourself per hour to do the shopping! I like to figure around $20 but you can go for more if you like!! If it’s going to take me another ½ an hour to load my two year old back in the car (in the below zero temperatures here!) and drive across town just to save 10 cent/pound on grapes, that’s $10 more of my time which is way more valuable to me.
Couponing Takes Too Long
That’s the great thing with couponing, once you’ve got it down to a fine art form, it doesn’t take long at all. Plus quite honestly the benefits far outweigh the cost. In about an extra hour per week I save at least 50-60% on my grocery bill. That’s huge. In fact if I think about monetary savings it’s about $35-$50/week that I save. That calculates out at around $40 an hour which to me is a great wage! Plus, here’s the kicker: I take all the hard work out of it for you by showing you what coupon to use on what product to get it cheap over at www.mummydeals.org.
How Can Free be Free?
I often talk about getting free toiletries or even free food and people look at me like I dropped down from another planet. The bottom line is: I often get toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorants, contact lens solution, facial creams for free. Free. When you’re trying to cut your budget it doesn’t matter if you prefer another brand or not, if that type of toothpaste isn’t free that week it’s not going in my cart. If you have no idea that local stores offer free products after rebate programs check out the Walgreens and CVS links on my website.
