This Little Prayer of Mine – Giveaway!

As a mom, I’m always looking for ways to teach my children about my values and – even more challenging – actually pass them on.  So I was interested when author Anthony DeStefano contacted me with a request that I review his new children’s book “This Little Prayer of Mine.”  Both my boys love to read (as do I) so I rarely turn down good books.

One obvious strength of this book is the artwork.  I am nothing like an artist, so illustrations typically pass me by unnoticed.  But for some reason I noticed the pictures in “This Little Prayer of Mine.”  They’re beautiful – at least to me – warm and welcoming, and they work well with the words of the story.

The message of the book is right on for kids – talking about being sad or scared, how hard it can be to share, how exciting to dream about the future, how devastating to feel left out.

There are a few aspects of the message that I would change, had I written the book.  The story starts out addressing God “up in Heaven” and saying he can hear our voice “from there.”  Though we tend to think of God as being “up” in the sky somewhere far away, of course he isn’t really and as a Christians I believe that God is actually as close as the air we breathe.  The story twice has the children refer to themselves as “just” a little child/kid.  I don’t think kids – and God, for that matter – think of themselves that way.

But these are picky critiques, and this is a book I feel happy to read my boys.  In fact, bedtime stories are just about to begin as I write this…
