Sleep at last!

Over Christmas I was traveling alone with my two young boys. It was a long day and I received a lot of sympathetic looks and comments from my fellow travelers, but I also met a lot of Mommies with brand new babies. They looked on me with astonishment at the great feat I was performing. And they all asked me the same question: When do they start sleeping through the night?
My answer didn’t comfort them…or myself for that matter. As I nodded toward my 13 month old I said “Well…not yet.” Their faces fell, but after a bit more conversation I found that their six and nine week old babies were already sleeping well, waking only once or twice per night. I reassured them that their babies were sleeping well for their age and it would be a matter of a few short months before a night sleep would be in sight.
As for myself, its been 13 long months of not sleeping. For the first 9 months he was up every two hours at least, sometimes much, much less. Then he started getting up only three times a night (oh, Heaven!), then only two, then only one. As I stumbled sleepily through my days I tried to imagine what it was like to fall asleep at night and not wake until morning. What must that feel like? I honestly couldn’t imagine.
And then, last night came.
Little Bee went to bed. I went to bed. At 6:15am I woke up. Nothing but sleep happened in between.
Wow.
Who knows how long until it happens again, but I can’t help but rejoice. For more than 13 months (because we all know you don’t sleep in the last trimester of pregnancy) I have never, not even once, slept all night. And last night I did.
Sleep at last.

Hooray for sleep! Good job Little Bee!
