Lots of Lego Fun

Posted at 9:23 am on January 18, 2010 by Farrah

We are always on the hunt for new indoor fun, especially this time of year when the thrill of snow is starting to wane.  I’m sure you are feeling the same way.  So in the spirit of finding a new indoor-playground, we decided to try LegoLand this weekend.  I had never tried it before because I had it in my head that it was mostly for older kids and always WAY too crowded.  But, we heard they were featuring a special display for Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, so we decided to check it out.  We had a blast!!LegoMLKJr

LegoLand Discovery Center is located in the Streets of Woodfield Shopping Center, near Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.  If you are having trouble finding it, just look for the giant Lego giraffe.  You  can’t miss it!  When you first walk in, there is this super-cool model of the city of Chicago- all in Legos!!  The Sears Tower alone took over 130,000 ChicagoLegosLegos!!  It is pretty amazing how detailed and to scale the buildings and attractions of the city are.  They also have a life-size Barack Obama and Batman and Harrison Ford and Darth Vader- again, all Legos!  My boys loved the Jungle Room where all the monkeys and hippos and alligators, etc..  are all Legos.  The MLKJr display we heard about was really.  They had tables set out for kids to help build the display out of Legos.  They also had a place for kids to write down their dreams and put them in this box that is part of the display.  Very cool!

I would still say LegoLand is mainly geared for older kids. But my boys at ages almost 4 and almost 18months still had a great time.  There is a ginormous room at the back of the upper level that is all tables full of Legos.  Kids can play and create to their heart’s content.  This is where we spent the majority of our time.  My hubby and my boys built race cars and then raced them on the race tracks with other kids.  I am not sure who had more fun- my preschooler or my husband!

CadenLegosThey also have a climbing area and a play area with over-sized rubber Legos for the little kids to enjoy.  There are a couple rides and a 4-D movie theater which we did not do this time.  And a model workshop where they help the kids create some Lego masterpieces.  We didn’t do that either.  I think we are still a bit young for that. But we loved watching how they make Legos agt the “Factory Tour” and playing with more Legos than we could ever imagine!!  It was a fun day for all of us.

We will definitely go back.  It is a great idea for some cold weather, indoor fun!!  Check it out!

  1. We went as well and LOVED it. My three year old LOVED the Bob the Builder 4D movie (ok, so did I) and went on the flying bicycle ride, the jungle exhibition and the factory “tour.” Ironically, the part that seemed too old to us was the part where you spent most of your time, but we went on a school holiday and it was PACKED with kids – I think that made it more intimidating them. Fun though!
