Thanksgiving Fun for your Kiddos (and you!)

Turkey Day is right around the corner. Hard to believe that it is already the end of November. You all have probably already started your Christmas shopping and holiday preparations. I LOVE the Advent season so I am busily planning what activities I will do this year with my boys. I have some ideas to share soon and would love to hear any that y’all have too. But this week, I am sharing a fun craft with you that my 3yr. old and I came up with. We had a blast and hopefully you will too.
Brown Paper Bag Turkey Craft
1. Find a brown paper bag. Lunch bag size will do fine, but I had one that was a bit bigger so we used that one. We crumpled up newspaper and stuffed the bag until we had a nice fat turkey.
2. Take a pipe cleaner (we used a red one but you could use whatever you have) and close the top of the bag, leaving and inch or so of the bag to make the head of the turkey.
3. Color on the eyes and glue on a yellow triangle for the beak. Viola! Turkey!! Now for the feathers….
4. I cut a bunch of feathers out of different colors of construction paper. We glued the feathers to the back of our turkey.
(Little tip: putting a slight crease about 1/3 down on the feather kept them from flopping over and helped them stand up straight and fan out to look more like feathers.)
5. As a finishing touch, my son painted some feathers on the front of the turkey. This was his favorite part and made the turkey more “toddler-friendly.” Once he painted the front, he exclaimed “Mommy, don’t you love our turkey!”
We both had a fun making this simple, but super-cute turkey. If you try it, I would love to see your pictures too.
Our turkey will be the center-piece for the family Thanksgiving table this year. We will also be putting up our Thanksgiving Tree
again this year.
There are so many other really cute Thanksgiving crafts you can do with your kids. Check out Kaboose.com for some great ideas.
Tin Can Turkey- similar to my idea but smaller and using felt. Really cute though. We may have to try this one too.
Hands and Feet Turkey- very simple. You only need construction paper and scissors your kids’ hands and feet!
Leaves Garland- everyone write something they are thankful for on a leaf and then you string them together.
For other ideas, check here and here.
I love Thanksgiving because the focus is on family and gratefulness and is doesn’t seem so commercialized as other holidays. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving, spending time together and taking a break from the busy bustle of life.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all.

Cute Turkey!
Thanks for these fun ideas Farrah.
We’re gonna do our Thanksgiving tree again this year. I think we’ll make it an activity on Thanksgiving day this year. We’ve been too busy to do it today. Also, I’m looking for activities to do on Thanksgiving this year since it’s just our family & they won’t have playmates.
J came home from preschool with a really cute turkey made from a plastic cup, constuction paper and string and he makes a “gobble gobble” sound. It’s kind like this: http://craftsanity.com/?p=979
