Pen Stains

I’ve heard many friends lament to me over the pen stains on their clothing or furniture from toddlers getting a hold of a ball point or just having a leaky pen explode on them at work. I am not very sympathetic. I usually say, “Pen? That’s no big deal.” Which leads to my method for removing pen marks from fabric (and sometimes even wooden play kitchens). Our couch was once used for writing practice. I did not know my 4 year old could write the letters P, Q, R and Z so nicely.IMG_3998

Here is a step by step photo guide to pen removal.

1)First find the pen marking:

(If you are worried about the colorfastness of your fabric test a small corner first.)

3)Let soak:

4)Take moderately wet cloth and wipe the stain and hairspray away:

5) Repeat as necessary until all the pen is removed.  Wash the remaining hairspray out of clothing according to normalIMG_4001 washing directions. Clean upholstery or other non launderables with a damp cloth until hairspray is removed and let air dry.

Please note, this does not work with permanent markers like Sharpi.
