Disney on Ice- a magical evening

Posted at 3:37 pm on September 9, 2009 by Farrah

Yesterday was a very full day.  My son had his first day of preschool, which is a full day event in itself.  Add to that some much needed grocery shopping and a mandatory meeting at work and that is more than enough to keep thisDSCN0481 mama on the go all day.  But last night also happened to be the opening night of Disney on Ice in Chicago.  Being a long-time Disney fan myself and having passed that onto my little guy, we had decided several weeks ago that we would go, not knowing how crazy this day would turn out to be.  I questioned my sanity as we sat in traffic, both boys already a bit cranky and knowing we would get home way past bedtime.  I just muttered a quick prayer that the evening would turn out to be a fun time for us all.  I wasn’t disappointed.

DSCN0507As soon as the lights went down, we all sat mesmerized by the activity on the ice.  My big boy preschooler sat silent with wide eyes as Mickey and Minnie and all our beloved characters skated around to our favorite songs.  There was something really magical about sitting there with my baby on my lap and my toddler by my side, singing the songs that brought back memories from my own childhood.  This may sound totally lame, but in some strange way it made me feel more like a mom.  Like I was creating this magical thing called “childhood” for my boys by giving them this grand experience. Even my 1y.o sat captivated (for a little while) by the dancers on the ice and the bright lights and costumes.  DSCN0524

I could sit here and tell you the line up of stories to try and convince you that it is worth checking out.  But truthfully even the stories that I didn’t know well (Toy Story, the Incredibles, etc…) were fun to watch on the ice. The amazing costumes, the toe-loops and jumps on the ice, and all the fun music made the show truly enchanting.

Today, my older son has talked about it non-stop.   He’s “ice skating” around the kitchen and telling anyone who will listen about seeing Mickey and Belle and Pinnochio on ice skates.  He gets that same wide-eyed look when he talks about it- like he is replaying it in his mind.  And I can’t stop grinning too.  It was just a magical evening for us, the perfect ending to a busy day.

If you want to check out this magical show for yourself, you still have time.  The show runs through Sunday the 13th at the United Center.  More information is available on their website or Facebook Fan page.  Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.  Use coupon code “MOM” to get 4 tickets for $44.  If you go, please share your experience with us.  We would love to hear about it!
