Helping to Feed Other People’s Families

Posted at 1:04 am on August 31, 2009 by Farrah

We have been talking a lot about feeding our families lately.  Gardening, buying groceries, menu planning, etc…  It is a lot of work at times, especially when we are trying so hard to do it well.  Thank you all for joining in the conversation with us.  These tasks of motherhood seem less daunting when we have people to walk the journey along with us.

But as much as I may stress at times about what food to buy and prepare for my Hubby and boys, I try to continually remind myself that there are families for whom this task is WAY harder- people far away and people in our own DuPage County alike.  So as a conclusion to our series on Feeding Our Family, I want to share with you some ways I know of in our community to bless others out of the plenty that we have been blessed with.

Feed My Starving Children-
555 Exchange Ct.  Aurora, IL  630-851-0404

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization that is committed to providing nutritious meals to children worldwide who are in need.  They ship millions of meals to over 60countries.  At their packing location in Aurora, you and your group can go and they will teach you how to pack their meals which include rice, soy, and vitamins andFMSC minerals-all specifically put together to create the most nutritious meal possible.  It is an amazing experience to go and pack meals.  At the end of your time there, the staff tells you how many children you have helped to feed with the meals you have put together.  It will blow you away. My church group has gone several times and we have a blast every time we go.  Plus, the feeling you get when you walk away is unbeatable- knowing that with just a small donation of my time and money, I have helped to put food into the hands of children worldwide who might otherwise have gone hungry.  I can’t recommend this enough.  Go online now and see when you and your group can go.  You must have at least 10people and the spots fill up fast.  If you are in need of an extra set of hands, let me know.  I can’t wait to go back.

Timber Creek Farms Feed a Family Foundation

Timber Creek Owner Tony Moauro started this foundation in 2006 with the goal of providing healthy, organic foods to area families that might otherwise not be able to afford it.  Through the tax-deductible donations of their members, they are able to provide boxes of organic produce to people throughout their delivery area and bless them with some healthy food.  I have already been very impressed with Timber Creek and the services they provide.  But even more so, I love that they match the donations and have made it a priority to give back to the community in this way.  What an easy way for us to help those in our own community who are in need.  I’m sure those moms are just as concerned about feeding their kids the best food possible as I am.  And now I have a way to give to my community in that way.  And you do too.

Food Pantries:

bread1.xBeyond these two options, there are also several food pantries in the area that serve those in our community.  You can donate money or your time or items for the pantry- all of which are greatly needed and appreciated.  Here is a great list provided by People’s Resource Center in Wheaton of things they are in desperate need of- baby food, ziploc bags, larger diapers, canned goods, etc…  Call the food pantry in your neighborhood to see what items they are in need of or if you are interested in donating finances or your time.

Do you know of other ways to give back to our community?  Ways to help others who may be struggling to feed their families?  Please share your ideas with us!!
