GIVEAWAY!!- My Read and Rhyme Bible

My family is Christian, and it is very important to me that I pass on my faith and values to my children. Except, that seems so very very difficult to do well. I’ve mentioned on my personal blog it feels like I own a copy of just about every Bible Story Book published in the last 10 years. And I’m not completely happy with any of them.
And yet, I just can’t seem to get enough. Always on the look out for the potentially perfect solution to present itself, I was super excited when My Read and Rhyme Bible Storybook arrived at my door.
I really like this one! Don’t get me wrong – it doesn’t win the elusive (impossible?) title of Perfect Biblestory Book, but its currently in my top two. (Here’s the other). Here’s some of what I like.
It truly is a story book, and the stories really are in rhyme – as in, Dr. Seuss style rhyme. I was afraid that this would be really cheesy and tending to either make poor rhymes or poor theology, but I have to say the writers were pretty witty with their word choices. Then, I feel this book does a good job of delving into the not-age-appropriate aspects of the Bible just enough to be true to the story without being traumatic for young children who aren’t ready to discuss extreme violence and other adult (Biblical) themes. As I’ve said in the past, I don’t like Bible Story Books that water down the stories to the point where there is no point left, or the theology is completely changed. But at the
same time, I’m not ready to discuss massacre and death-by-lions to my sons either. Its a hard balance to strike.
I actually think the rhyme structure of this book helps out here. Somehow its easier to talk about scary things while rhyming. Who knew? As a result, I would recommend this more for younger children. I’m sure in a few years we’ll be ready to go a bit deeper.
So, Dupage County’s own Tyndale has done it again – they can now claim both of my top two Bible Story Books.
But don’t just take my word for it – I have a copy to give away! If you’d like to enter the drawing, leave a comment on this post telling us something that helps you teach your kids. If you’d like to enter a second time, twitter or facebook or blog (or whatever!) this post, OR subscribe to our feed, and let me know in the comments that you did. I’ll pick the winner at random next Wednesday, August 26th and will post the winner. Be sure to sign in for your comment in a way that we can get ahold of you if you win!

I love to share my faith with my daughter. Every day we play a game of what God created today. She tells me one thing she is so glad God gave her today and I do the same. At 2 1/2 she is starting grasp just how great God is! We also love reading Bible Stories from her Usborne books Bible each night.
I’d love a copy of this Bible! David really enjoys Dr. Seuss right now. One thing that helps me teach my kids about God is praying about everything together.
Experiencial learning is the best – having the kids become part of their learning by doing, touching, seeing, etc. They don’t even realize they are learning!
My something falls more into the category of “what not to do” when teaching children about God. Do NOT begin by explaining that God is everywhere, including right here in the child’s bedroom! It took Pie a year to overcome her defensive atheism after that one.
Right now my son asks a million questions that I can’t answer. A lot of why’s and things, and I try to use that when I can (not everytime, he’ll stop listening) to explain that some things are just “that way” because God made them that way. Then we talk about what we like about those things.
Thanks!
We’d love a copy of this book of bible stories for children. We’re on a similar hunt for a good one and have not found a satisfactory fit yet. We find that teaching often happens by just asking the kids a simple question and following the conversation from there. They often respond with questions of their own.
I use everyday situations to try to teach Bible truth and consistently read Bible stories and apply them to everyday life. This book looks great!
Jesus loves you
